How to use kontextURLs with Google Adwords

Google has a strict policy regarding the display URL to be used in an ad as detailed here However, kontextURLs can be used to track Google Ads provided the correct format is adhered to.

with Google Adwords for additional reporting capabilities including better segmentation via Content Tags, Conversion Paths, real-time click tracking and the ability to combine Adwords click data with the same from other channels. 

To create a kontextURL for Google Adwords, the first thing you will want to do is create the Tags and Tag Values relative to the campaign you are creating. 

  1. Login to your kontextURL Dashboard.
  2. Click Create & Manage kontextURLs.    
  3. Fill in the following fields with information about the URL you would like to track:  
    • URL to be Tracked - Enter the Destination URL where you want the kontextURL to redirect traffic. Include the HTTP:// or HTTPS://. (Note: This domain must match the Display URL to be used in Google Adwords
    • Domain - Select a domain for your URL. Note: You can use or a uniquely branded domain of your choosing. Contact if you need assistance setting up a branded domain.
    • Friendly / Vanity URL Path *Optional - Enter a vanity or friendly URL extension to be used after the domain. This can be used for additional URL branding or identification. e.g. - would denote a URL associated with Campaign A to be shared via Google Adwords
    • URL Title - Enter a Title for your URL for reference in reporting.
    • Description - Enter a description for your URL for additional reference.
    • Privacy / Cookie Setting - Select a Privacy setting for the URL. Note: Some countries require cookies must be set to Enable Users to Allow or Disallow cookies or No Tracking. 
  4. Select a Taxonomy (Click here to learn more about Taxonomies).
  5. Select Content Tags (Click here to learn more about Content Tags) you would like added to the URL.
  6. Select the Tag Values you would like added to the URL.
  7. Click Create a kontextURL button  
  8. Copy the kontextURL link address provided and paste this into the Tracking Template field.
  9. Append ?url={lpurl} to the end of the pasted URL.



Examples of accepted and not accepted URLs

In the table below, "Display URL" refers to the URL users see in the ad and "Landing page" (destination url) refers to the final landing page where users end up after clicking on the ad.
